What is Southern Hockey?

Southern Hockey is one of eight hockey Regions in New Zealand. Regions are made up of Member Associations, which are responsible for administering the sport within their local area. These Associations have local competitions, community programmes and junior representative teams.

Our region encompasses five associations, situated in the far south of New Zealand. You can learn more about our five member associations on the Associations page.

Southern is the link between the local associations and Hockey New Zealand. Southern supports and advises its Associations with their community programmes, and offers extra development opportunities for players, coaches and officials. Southern works to raise the level  of hockey within  the region by fostering inter-association engagement, and by identifying talented players for its performance programmes and teams, which compete against other regions in National Tournaments. Southern manages Under 18, Under 21, National Hockey League  and Masters teams.

Southern measures its success in a number of ways, however, the most obvious indicators are the number of people participating in hockey in the region, and the performance of our teams and players on the national stage.

Southern is an incorporated society governed by a Board made up of Association Representatives and independent members. You can learn more about the Board here. The staff of Southern carry out the programmes set by the board and Hockey New Zealand. You an meet the staff here

While Southern has existed in the name of representative teams for any years, it was only officially incorporated as an independent organisation in 2010. It employed its first staff members in 2014, finally allowing  it to become an organisation in more than name.
